The Witcher franchise is based on a book series by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. The first book – The Last Wish, was published in 1993, and the latest – Season of Storms, in 2013. Right now, in 2019, there is even a Netflix series being filmed, starring Superman actor Henry Cavill. But we’re here to talk about the game, not books or TV shows. The game was developed by CD Projekt Red and published by Atari in 2015.
Lore in the Witcher series
Because the Witcher game franchise is based on books, it has rich and complicated lore. The game is set in a land just known as The Continent. It all starts with a supernatural event called The Conjunction of the Spheres. Basically, what happened, is that a parallel universe has collided with ours and released all kinds of witches, monsters, and ghouls into the world. For a while, the monsters have been terrorizing the citizens, killing and pillaging villages and cities. That was, until the government decided to train and employ warriors with special abilities to fight them, since the army didn’t stand a chance. These skilled warriors were named Witchers. Highly trained soldiers with supernatural abilities able to kill monsters with ease.
Fast forward a couple of years, most of the monsters have been exterminated, and there was no longer need for Witchers. As a result, they have been banished and are now looked down upon by the regular citizens in disgust. But still, there are some who have jobs for them, mostly tied to killing monsters and using their abilities to find people. And that’s where we meet our protagonist, Geralt of Rivia, also known as the Butcher of Blaviken, and the game begins.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
The whole plot of the third installment of the Witcher series is about finding Geralt’s daughter Ciri, who is currently being hunted down by the Wild Hunt, a ghastly group of riders that bring frost wherever they go, basically the White Walkers of the Witcher universe. Along the way, Geralt meets people who he ends up doing jobs for that include finding missing people and objects, killing ghouls and witches, but also recovering stolen pans, for some reason. I don’t want to spoil the game for those of you who haven’t played it yet, so I’m not going to go further into the whole story. In my opinion, it’s a game everyone should play at least once.
The Witcher 3 is an absolute masterpiece and the best RPG ever made, and probably ever to exist. The gameplay is so smooth, you could even probably play the game and forget you’re sitting at your desk. The story and lore alone are enough for it to remain the best game ever made.
